PT Pertamina (Persero) is committed to utilizing forest ecosystems productively and sustainably through the Hutan Lestari (Sustainable Forest) program. As of 2024, the program has initiated 337 tree-planting initiatives, managing an accumulated land area of up to 891 hectares.
As part of the Hutan Lestari program, a strategic collaboration is carried out with the Ministry of Forestry through the Social Forestry program, which provides intensive support to 13 Social Forestry Business Groups (KUPS) across various regions in Indonesia.
This initiative supports the government’s Asta Cita program for food self-sufficiency, with 12 of the social forestry groups focusing on producing and strengthening food commodities. These include rice, fruits (pineapple, longan, soursop, dragon fruit, durian, mango, rambutan, avocado, banana, betel nut, and coconut), processed seafood, coconut oil, honey, palm sugar, nutmeg, and coffee. Some of these commodities are part of the 12 National Strategic Food Commodities, including rice, sugar, coconut oil, and fish.
Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, emphasized that beyond enhancing economic welfare and promoting environmental conservation through the Social Forestry program, the initiative encourages supporting government food programs.
"Through the Social Forestry program, KUPS is expected to maximize forest land to boost food productivity. A tangible example is the KUPS Margo Rukun Bestari in Ulubelu, Tanggamus Regency, Lampung, which has successfully produced environmentally friendly coffee, honey, organic fertilizer, and productive plant seedlings. These products not only meet local food needs but also expand market access with commercial products like Beloe Coffee," Fadjar explained.
Pertamina's support includes technical training, access to funding, and institutional strengthening for KUPS. This community-based governance system enables farming groups to establish independent and sustainable productive enterprises. One key innovation is environmentally friendly technology integration at every production stage, from seedling to marketing.
Wastoyo, a beneficiary of the Social Forestry Program with Margo Rukun Bestari, highlighted the positive impacts on the community. The 40-hectare program involves 10 forest farmer groups.
"KUPS Margo Rukun Bestari has successfully produced 190,000 productive tree seedlings and processed 70 tons of organic fertilizer annually from coffee husks, generating a turnover of IDR 1.5 billion annually. We are deeply grateful; managing this environmental conservation effort has been a blessing for all of us," Wastoyo said, also known as the Local Hero for the Margo Rukun Bestari Social Forestry Program.
With its collaborative and innovative spirit, the Hutan Lestari program has successfully planted over 8 million productive and mangrove trees while empowering local communities economically, increasing group income by up to IDR 3 billion annually for 4,783 individuals.
The Hutan Lestari program directly contributes to achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly ending hunger (SDG 2), ensuring sustainable consumption and production (SDG 12), and climate action (SDG 13). Moreover, the initiative aligns with the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), which serve as the foundation for Pertamina's sustainable business operations.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina’s business lines and operations.
